Short itinerary

Day 01: Cusco – Mollepata – Challa cancha – Soraypampa

You will be picked up at your hotel and then take a bus from Cusco to Mollepata, from where you will begin a hike. During the trek, you will have lunch in Soraypampa, and you will have the option to visit the Humantay lagoon. After walking approximately 13 km, you will have dinner and spend the night in the exclusive DOMOS.

Day 02: Soraypampa – Abra Salkantay – Wayracpunko – Chaullay

After breakfast, you will hike to the “Abra Salkantay” and enjoy panoramic views. Then, you will have lunch in Pacaymayu and continue the hike. Finally, you will have dinner and spend the night at Chaullay camp, after having walked approximately 22 km that day.

Day 03: Chaullay – La playa – Santa teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas calientes – Hotel

The itinerary for that day includes an early breakfast followed by a hike, which leads to Sahuayaco beach. Afterwards, you will have lunch before transporting to Hidroeléctrica. From there, you will hike to Aguas Calientes for dinner and overnight in the town’s lodge. The total distance will be approximately 16 km (10 miles) on average.

Day 4: Machu Picchu

The day will begin with breakfast at the lodge, followed by a bus ride to Machu Picchu. Once there, a tour guide will lead a tour of the site. Then, you will hike back to Aguas Calientes. Finally, you will return to the city of Cusco by train and bus, marking the end of the tour.

Complete Itinerary

Day 01: Cusco – Mollepata – Challa cancha– Soraypampa- Laguna Humantay

Cusco (3, 400 masl): Tour participants will be picked up at 4:00 am directly from their hotels and depart to the town of Mollepata. The trip itself lasts approximately 2 and a half hours. Once there, a delicious breakfast will be offered before starting the planned hike.

Challa cancha (3,600 masl): After an hour of hiking, you will be able to appreciate the incredible views of the valleys of Mollepata. In Challa cancha, you will meet the Salkantay team (composed of cooks, muleteers and mules or pack horses). They will give a warm welcome before preparing for the adventure in the mountains. Before starting, a brief explanation about the trek will be given. During 3 hours you will walk through a flat Andean terrain, where you will be able to observe the majestic Nevado de Humantay (5,917masl) and acclimatize properly for the rest of the trek.

Soraypampa (3,900 masl): After the hike, you will continue to Soraypampa, where you will find the Salkantay Sky Domes, where you will be able to admire the impressive Salkantay mountain. Upon arrival at the camp, the Salkantay team will be waiting for you and you will enjoy a delicious Andean lunch. After lunch, there will be a short rest of 30 minutes.

Humantay Lagoon (4,200 masl): After a well-deserved rest and lunch, you will begin a hike of about an hour and a half to the beautiful Humantay Lagoon. During the hike, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the panoramic views of the lagoon and the glaciers of the mountain. Then, you will descend to the camp and at tea time you will be able to chat with the group. Finally, you will enjoy dinner and rest to recharge your energies.

Day 02: Soraypampa – Abras Salkantay – Wayracpunko – Chaullay

Soraypampa (3, 900 masl): At 5:30 am a hot breakfast will be served, and then begin the hike to the highest point of the trek (4650m / 15200ft), located between two huge mountains.

Abra Salkantay highest point (4,630 masl): During the hike, we will be able to observe the majesty of the Salkantay mountain in its entirety, which is impressive and shows us the grandeur of nature and divine creation.

Huayracpunku (4,000 masl): Following the hike, we will have views of the Salkantay and Humantay mountains, with heights of 6271m and 4120m respectively. From the pass, you can appreciate the snow-capped mountains, and it is possible that there is snow in the area. After enjoying the scenery, you will continue walking through a cloud forest until you reach Huayracpunku, where you will have lunch.

Chaullay (2,800 masl): After lunch, you will hike into the jungle until you reach the second campsite where you will have dinner. During this trek, you will be able to appreciate the impressive Andean landscape, which will also be visible from the camp located at an altitude of approximately 2,900 meters.

Day 03: Chaullay – La playa – Santa teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas calientes – Hotel

Chaullay (2,800 masl): We start the day early, at 6:00 am, after breakfast. This day is especially interesting because we will have the opportunity to admire a great variety of plants, including some medicinal and esoteric plants, as well as orchids. In addition, we will pass through several villages during the hike.

La Playa (2,064 masl): We continue our journey and arrive at Collpa Pampa La Playa, a beautiful place that has thermal baths where we can immerse ourselves for an hour to relax. After this pleasant rest, we will go to the beach to enjoy a tasty lunch and rest for about an hour. Then, we will continue our trip to Santa Teresa, for which we will use local transportation.

Hidroeléctrica (1,820 masl): Once we arrive in Santa Teresa, we take another means of transportation that will take us to Hidroeléctrica, from where we will begin our last stage to reach Aguas Calientes.

Aguas Calientes (2,040 masl): We begin a 3-hour hike from the hydroelectric plant to reach Aguas Calientes, where we can relax and take a bath at the hotel. Afterwards, we will enjoy dinner and stay in a comfortable hotel.

Day 4: Machu Picchu

Aguas Calientes (2,040 masl): We wake up at 4:30 a.m. to get ready and at 5:00 a.m. we have breakfast at our corresponding hotel.

Machu Picchu (2, 430 masl): After lining up early to catch one of the first buses to Machu Picchu, which operate on a first-come, first-served basis, the bus ride takes 25 to 30 minutes to the citadel. Once there, the gates to Machu Picchu open at 6 am. Be sure to bring your original passport and make sure it is the same one you made your reservation with because the park rangers will ask for it at the entrance (and you can get a Machu Picchu stamp in it if you wish). Your guide will help you find the best places to take pictures in the Sanctuary and then begin a guided tour of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. We will visit different archaeological sites inside the citadel of Machupicchu such as the Agricultural Zone, Urban Zone, Temple of the Sun, Royal Residence, Sacred Plaza, Inti Huatana, Sacred Rock, among others. After the visit, we will board our train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy at 14:30, 16:12 or 19:00 hours.

Optional:

  • Huayna Picchu: If you wish to extend your experience with a spectacular view from the top of Huayna Picchu, you must book in advance and the additional cost per person is $35. Getting to the top takes about 45 minutes and represents quite a challenge.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain: An additional alternative is to climb Machu Picchu Mountain, which involves a 90-minute hike up and an additional cost of $25 per person. Although it is a very difficult hike, it offers one of the most spectacular and beautiful views of all. From there you can get breathtaking panoramic views.
  • Buffet Lunch: We suggest you visit and eat at the MAPI Restaurant, with an additional cost of $25.00.

  • Runkuraqay Camp: Runkuraqay camp is the second camp on the Inca Trail route after Wayllabamba camp. Hikers spend their second night at this camp after hiking up a steep section of the trail and passing through the Warmiwañusca Pass (known as the Dead Woman’s Pass) at an altitude of 4,000 meters. The Runkuraqay camp has basic facilities such as tents, portable toilets and a common area for hikers to rest.
