Trip Description

The 4-day Ausangate tour with the colorful mountain is a unique opportunity to explore the Andes Mountains in Peru. You will start with the imposing Ausangate mountain, one of the highest in the Cusco region. Then, you will visit the beautiful mountain of colors, where you will enjoy wildlife, glaciers, waterfalls and frozen rivers. The scenery will include breathtaking views of fertile valleys and snow-capped mountains in the Cordillera Vilcanota, southeast of the region.

Day 01: Cusco Pueblo Tinqui – Aguas Termales Upis (Rainbow Mountain — Ausangate Trek)

We will leave Cusco early in the morning by private van to Tinqui, a small town. On the way, we will be able to admire the impressive Vilcanota mountain range and visit some traditional Andean villages, where we will have the opportunity to stop and take pictures. In Tinqui, where our trail will begin, we will enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared by our chef while our muleteers take care of preparing the luggage and packs on the horses. We will begin our hike through farming communities and enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains for approximately 3 hours. Then, we will stop for lunch and continue walking for another 2 hours to reach Upis, which is at an altitude of 4,100 meters(13,448ft). Here we will have the opportunity to relax in the local hot springs before dinner and overnight camping.

Day 02: Upis Arapa Pass — Pucacocha (Rainbow Mountain — Ausangate Trek)

After a hearty breakfast, we will begin our hike starting from the camp. We will start climbing up to the Arapa Pass (4,850 m / 15,908 ft), from where we will be able to appreciate an impressive panoramic view that contrasts the arid desert with the imposing snow-capped peaks of Ausangate and Pucacocha. In this area we will also find three beautiful lakes of red, green and turquoise colors (Pucacocha, Hatun Pucacocha and Qomercocha). Finally, we will arrive at our second camp, located near the Ausangate glacier.

Day 03: Pucacocha — Ausangate — Minasniyuq – Surine Cocha (Rainbow Mountain – Ausangate Trek)

Upon waking up, you will be offered room service with a cup of coca tea to start the day off right. This will be a beautiful day where you will see the rainbow mountains and pass through the village of Alccatauri, where you will see traditional village life. Despite the lack of trees in the area, the residents are very resourceful and build their houses with mud adobe. You will start the day with a 1-hour uphill hike to the Ausangate pass (4,930 m/ 16,170 ft), where you will see red mountains and animals such as vicuñas, chinchillas and alpacas.

After enjoying the views, you will descend for 17 hours until you reach the village of Alccatauri (4,400 m/14,435 ft), where you will give offerings of coca leaves as a token of gratitude for their hospitality. After this experience, you will continue with a 30-minute hike uphill until you reach the place where you will have lunch in a rustic lodge. After a satisfying lunch, you will continue the hike uphill to the second pass and continue for another hour until you reach the Rainbow Flame trail (5,020 m / 16,469 ft), where you will make offerings to Pacha Mama.

Finally, the rest of the day will be a one hour hike down to the camp on the shores of Surine Lake, called Surine Cocha (4,800 m / 15,748 ft).

Day 04: Surine Cocha — Rainbow Mountain — Pueblo de Qesiuno — Cusco (Rainbow Mountain — Ausangate Trek

After breakfast, we will start hiking to the famous Rainbow Mountain (5,020 m / 16,469 ft) for 2 hours, and your guide will take you to the best places to take pictures of these incredible mountains and the other surrounding mountains. The guide will also explain why these mountains are so unique: they are made of various minerals that create different colors of stone striations. These mountains are found in Peru and South America, they cannot be found in any other country in the world, China. After enjoying the views and taking pictures, we will continue walking for 2 hours to reach the village of Quesiuno, where we will have lunch. Then, a private van will be waiting for us to take us back to Cusco, which will take approximately 3 hours. After a rewarding experience, we will be dropped off at our hotel in Cusco around 6 PM.
